Bathroom Paint – Colour Inspiration + Painting Tips

I am convinced that the secret to our happy marriage is two bathrooms.  Since we work together, my husband and I usually get ready at the same time and having my own space means we’re not tripping over each other each morning.  It also means we each have our own storage space for toiletries so the bathroom isn’t cluttered with BOTH our stuff.

For years I claimed the old outdated bathroom just off our living room but over time, we made small upgrades to make it more attractive.  While there’s no doubt that bathrooms are one of the more expensive rooms in the house to completely renovate, painting the walls is one of the fastest and most economical ways to give that old bathroom a fresh new look.  It’s the perfect space to experiment with colour and flex those DIY muscles.

It’s amazing how a new paint colour can completely refresh a space so below I’ve put together a short list of my favourite shades for bathrooms.  To learn more about each space click on the images for sources and don’t forget to Pin YOUR favourites for later.  At the bottom of this post you will also find five tips that will come in handy when you’re ready to update your bathroom (click on the graphic to download a your copy).

Since the bathrooms is very much about water it’s no surprise that blue is one of my go-to shades for bathroom walls.  For a spa-like feel look for soft sea-foams and muted blues.   Keep the colour light to create a breezy space and pair with lots of white or Carrara marble.  While I love the silvery coolness of chrome, these colours will also pair beautifully with hardware in either brass or antique gold.

There’s an old design rule that you shouldn’t use dark colours in a small space because it will make the room feel even smaller.  It’s true but sometimes that’s not a bad thing!  Make a statement by painting the walls in a  compact bath a rich colour like blue, navy or even black!  Need convincing? For me no conversation on colour would be complete without talking about grey.  It’s one of my favourite shades so of course I’m going to sneak it in!  Grey can also be one of the toughest colours to get right because it can have so many undertones that change depending on the lighting in your space.  First, let’s start with the cool greys which have hints of either blue or violet.

I don’t know why my husband dislikes the work “greige” because it very accurately describes greys with a warm (almost beige) undertone.  Not only do these colours work well in the bathroom they’re perfect for all around interiors since they compliment most flooring, fabrics and accessories.
