5 Bedroom Updates For A Good Night’s Sleep

I LOVE sleep.  Most night you’ll find me in bed by nine p.m. and sound asleep shortly afterwards. It’s no wonder then that the bedroom is my favourite room in house (the new laundry room is a close second but more on my passion for laundry later).   For most of us, it’s our sanctuary at the end of a long day, a place to relax and recharge.

We all lead busy hectic lives so the quality of our sleep is important if we want to wake up refreshed and ready to tackle the day.  Luckily there are small changes that can make a big difference when it comes to getting a good night’s rest.  Below are some adjustments that have worked for us but remember – the bedroom is a very personal space so feel free to experiment.

Smell has always been one of my strongest senses.  It takes just a whiff of perfume or cologne to instantly trigger a memory for me so it’s no surprise that one of my favourite ways to create a soothing bedroom is with scent.   A couple of years ago I received a bottle of Deep Sleep Pillow Spray.   I mist it over our pillows before the evening shower and its gentle smell of relaxing lavender lingers for a couple of hours.

Since I prefer my smells musky, earthy or woody I’m also in love with Cire Trudon candles.  Every year my very generous husband picks up a couple from the Irish Linen Shop as a Christmas present and they last until the following December.

At the end of a long day I love slipping under crisp clean sheets.   I would love to have the time to change them daily (I would need an industrial sized laundry!) but realistically it’s more like once a week.  If you love crawling under the covers as much as I do invest in a quality pair of sheets.  In college I would buy the cheapest ones around but after a couple of washes they would get scratchy and rough.  Look for not only a high thread count but also sheets made from long fibers of quality cotton.  They will cost more at first but they will stay beautiful and soft for years to come.

These days technology is an unavoidable part of our lives but we’ve been working really hard to keep it out of the bedroom.  The glowing screen of our phone shouldn’t be the last thing we see at night and the first thing we look at in the morning.  It might not be realistic to cut it out completely but try to minimize the amount of time spent looking at various devices (television included!) at the end of the night.  Instead, use that time to meditate, take a few deep breaths and decompress.  Pretend a storm knocked out the internet! Those emails will still be there in the morning and after a good night’s sleep you’ll be in a better frame of mind to answer them.

Set the mood with colour!  Leave high energy shades like yellow, orange and red at the door and choose softer shades like grey, navy, sage green or neutral beige.  They’re easy on the eyes and won’t stimulate the brain.  Keep patterns to a minimum for the same reason.  Here are some of my favourites from Pinterest.  Don’t forget to click on the images for sources.

I have the same pillow spray and love it! Equally amazing is the mini roller to use on your pulse points. I especially love it while traveling. And, since you love musky scents like me, have you smelled Another Aud by Juliette Has a Gun? Cannot get enough of it!

LOVE Juliette Has A Gun! I haven’t tried the mini roller but will have to check it out. The pillow spray showed up in my Birchbox subscription and I’ve bough it a couple of times over since then. Thanks for visiting!
