Small Bathroom – BIG Style

My husband always jokes that the secret to a happy marriage is two bathrooms.  Since we both get ready and leave the house at the same time, I have to agree.  It IS much easier when we each have our own space in the morning.  Since I’m usually the first one up, it was only logical that I take the bathroom that’s farthest away from the master bedroom.  It just so happens to be the (much) smaller of the two.  But just because a space is small, that doesn’t mean it can’t have BIG style.

Often, it’s recommended to paint small spaces in light neutral tones but the bathroom is the perfect place to experiment with rich bold colours.  Walls are small so painting doesn’t take a lot of time and gratification is pretty instant. Not only is the project manageable time wise, you won’t use a lot of paint so giving your space a new look won’t require a huge budget.

Below are some of my favourite bathrooms in bright shades.  Pin your favourite and don’t forget to scroll down for painting tips.

Painting the bathroom IS easy but there are tricks to help you get a beautiful and durable result.

  •  If you love steamy hot showers (especially in the Winter) make sure you wait at least 24 hours after painting to use the bathroom.  Steam will settle on the wall and since the paint is water based, it will run down the walls.
  • For a durable finish you’ll be able to clean for years, choose a paint that’s designed for bathrooms.  Skip a flat finish and choose a matte, eggshell or satin.  You won’t get water marks and any dirt will wipe right off.  Benjamin Moore Regal Select and Aura paints, as well as Muralo’s Ultra line both make wonderful products.
  • If you don’t have great ventilation in the bathroom, choose a mold and mildew resistant paint but make sure you clean up any existing mold first.  Otherwise, it will just come through the paint.
  • If you love bright bold colours make sure you use a high quality high covering paint.  Otherwise you’ll spend all weekend applying coat after coat after coat.  Benjamin Moore Aura is one of my favourites.  Almost all colours will take no more than two coats so you can get on with your life and enjoy your new bathroom.
