RUSTIC WOOD – Mixing Old And New

I always think that some of the most interesting rooms mix design elements.  Adding a piece made from reclaimed or weathered wood is a great way to add a rustic touch to a soften a modern space.  For example, pair an old plank table with metal chairs or mix concrete countertops and a rough wood island in the kitchen.

You can find a lot of beautiful pieces in trendy stores like Restoration Hardware but some of the most amazing and budget friendly items can be found at house sales, consignment or antique stores.  Refinishing these pieces to fit into your design is often a simple weekend project. If you’re handy a DIY sign, headboard, barn door or even table can be made from scrap wood like shipping palettes.

TIP:  For function seal your rough wood with a clear varnish.  I prefer a water based formula like this one from General Finishes.  For the most natural look a flat finish works best.
