DIY & DESIGN FROM BERMUDA'S OLDEST PAINT STORE

Painted Floors

Over the years our floors take abuse – especially wooden ones.  Dirt, cleaning products, and general wear and tear will eventually need to be addressed.  Refinishing wood floors can be extremely rewarding but it can also be time consuming and expensive.  If new floors are not in your budget at the moment but you want to improve their look a fresh coat of paint can do wonders.

Preparing your floors for painting will require a bit of elbow grease.  Start with a thorough cleaning with hot water and ammonia (open the windows and turn on the fan for ventilation and make sure to wear gloves to protect your hands), let dry, then sand lightly to scuff up the surface.  Make a couple passes with a a tac cloth or a damp rag to pick up any sanding dust.

TIP:  Even though you paint may be dry enough for LIGHT traffic in about 12-24 hours, you should avoid placing furniture back for a couple of day to prevent it from sticking.  Also, avoid harsh cleaners until the paint has a chance to cure – usually in 3-4 weeks.

For the paint, a single part porch and patio works great.  A latex formula will be easy to use and dry faster without a lot of smell.  Most brands offer patio paints in standard and mixed colours so the possibilities are endless!  Have fun with patterns or stencils for a unique look.  We found some great ideas on Houzz.
